Areas of Specialty

When seeking a counselor, it is often challenging to know what to look for.  Andrea’s education and training come from Strengths, Narrative Therapy, and Trauma perspectives where hardships are honored and protected while exploring next steps.

A quote that has been particularly important in Andrea’s practice with clients comes from Sheldon Vanauken’s A Severe Mercy:

“But to a [person] on a mountain road by night, a glimpse of the next three feet of road may matter more than a vision of the horizon.”

In a time of darkness, we may know where we want to be, but have no idea where the next few steps will lead us. As a therapist, Andrea will listen, work with clients to establish safety, and provide counseling from a trauma-informed perspective.  An individualized counseling plan will be created with goals generated by the client.

  • Yes, EMDR can be done by Telehealth.

  • The frequency for having sessions is based on multiple factors:

    A. some clients find they need time in between sessions to process and choose to meet less frequently (1-2x month). Some find that meeting with regularity of 1x week is not overwhelming but helpful.  It may take a few  weeks to figure out what is right for each individual.

    B. Some clients have no copay and some have to meet their deductible first. Clients can call their insurance provider  to find out what the insurance plan specifically covers.

    C. Some clients find that meeting frequently at first and then tapering as they feel more rooted is appropriate.

    D. A Dwelling Place Counseling, LLC. does not meet with clients more than 2x week as a frequency.

  • Yes, clients should have a private space in their homes/location for sessions.  What a client would do at an in-person office is what a client should do for Telehealth.

For example: have the door closed to the room or meet in a place where others are not present, dress appropriately, etc.

  • Andrea has taken multiple courses on Trauma and Dissociation from ISSTD (International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation)

    Andrea also receives ongoing consultation.

  • In undergrad, Andrea met individuals who were going through grief.  Seeing how the community and society responded to those who were grieving was impactful.  Through connection with those individuals, Andrea learned about grief (specifically death loss). Andrea studied grief on the college campus which offered a lot of wisdom as to what people who are grieving need/want and what “non-grievers” (a term used in the study) perceive as their role.  Through this project, Andrea wanted to learn more about grief/loss and took a path towards working with those journeying through end of life and grief. Andrea was able to participate in internships with Gilda’s Club (a cancer support community started by Gilda Radner) and later went on to intern and work with Porter Hospice & St. Anthony Hospice.
